Asia buzzes over MLB’s Seoul opener; Taiwan opens 40,000-seat dome “Maybe we can…”

All of Asia is buzzing about the first-ever Major League Baseball Opening Day in South Korea.

On July 13, Major League Baseball announced that the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres will host Opening Day at Gocheok SkyDome in Seoul on July 21 and 22, 2024. This will be the first time a Major League Baseball Opening Day will be held in South Korea.

Major League Baseball has been hosting Major League Baseball games around the world in an effort to globalize the game. To date, Major League Baseball has hosted games in 29 cities in 11 countries. However, only Tokyo, Japan; Mexico City, Monterrey, and San Juan, Puerto Rico; Sydney, Australia; and London, England have ever hosted a Major League regular season game.

South Korea will become the 12th country to host a Major League Baseball game when it hosts next year’s Opening Day at Gocheok Dome. Seoul is the fifth city in history to host a regular-season opener, joining Monterrey, Mexico; Tokyo, Japan; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Sydney, Australia.

The Dodgers and San Diego’s opening game in Seoul is highly anticipated. At the Gold Glove press conference, Kim Ha-seong, who will be returning to the Gocheok Dome where he played for the KBO’s Kiwoom, said, “I feel honored to be able to play the first major league opening game in Korea. I hope that Major League Baseball will hold games and tournaments in Korea in the future.” “The players on my team are also very interested. They say they want to do it. I think I’ll go around telling them about Korea where I can. They’re coming to Korea for the first time, so I’ll take them around.”

Japan is also interested in the opening series in Seoul. Japan’s top star, Shohei Ohtani, is currently in free agency and could sign with the Dodgers. The Dodgers are considered one of the favorites to sign him.

In a different sense, Taiwan is showing interest in Major League Baseball’s opening game in Seoul. With South Korea hosting the opening game of the Major League Baseball season, there is hope that Taiwan can also host a major league game. 토토사이트

Outside of international tournaments like the World Baseball Classic (WBC), Taiwan has never hosted a major league team. In 2010 and 2011, Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taichung hosted Dodgers event games and the Major League Baseball All-Star Tour. However, there has never been a major league regular season game.
