Monuments and heritage sites are an embodiment of culture and heritage.
They stand the test of time reminding us of the roots, and sometimes serve
as inspiration moving forward. Zuid-Holland provincie is glorified by many
such heritage sites. The spaces have been used for various purposes,
but carry a common theme, they were part of the community.
The idea of community revolves strongly around monuments and heritage sites.
The community evolves and some monuments are used in a new way, while
others become irrelevant. This poses a challenge to keep the heritage site
alive and reimagine the purpose to the current time. It is a social as well
as an economical challenge to repurpose the spaces that are not relevant
anymore to best serve and be part of the community. The responsibility falls
to the provincie Zuid-Holland to design these sites in the best possible way.
In this challenge, there is a two fold problem of finding the best spaces out
of the 673 ones in disrepair and finding the best purpose. We can turn to
design and technology. The best locations can be chosen by monitoring the
sites along with location, demographic, income, crime, accessibility, and
surrounding business data to optimize the site selection. This is possible
with a location analytics web application custom built for the users. The
spaces then can be imagined as third spaces to be neutral, accessible,
inclusive, attractive, and welcoming for all members.
