“He knows my strengths and uses so well,” says Kim on reuniting with his old teacher
Kim Min-wook and head coach Kim Seung-ki reunited after six seasons.
Kim Min-wook (205 cm, C) made his debut in the 2017-2018 KBL Rookie Draft.바카라 He was known for his excellent outside shooting despite his height. He went on to play for Anyang KGC and then Suwon KT. He averaged 24.8 points in the D-League last season, but only played an average of seven minutes in the regular season.
After the season, Kim became a free agent and chose the Goyang Day One Jumpers (now the Sono Skygunners). At the time, the team was in the midst of a takeover, and Kim chose to take a chance.
“At the time, (Kim) chose to take a big risk,” said a Sono official. In fact, we were interested in him even before that, but we couldn’t get a trade. So we signed him as a free agent. However, it was a big risk for both him and us. At the time, the team was not finalised, but he trusted coach Kim Seung-ki,” he said.
“Coach Kim Seung-ki’s influence was great, but he contacted me and used me well in the past. He knows my strengths and uses very well, so I trusted him and chose Sono. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I didn’t have anything to read,” he said, explaining why he chose Sono.
Kim Min-wook had already worked with Sono in the past at KGC. “The way we train now is similar to the way I trained at KGC. But I haven’t mastered it yet. I’ve been training differently for a few years, so I’ve forgotten everything. (Laughs) I’m trying to revive it. I believe in the coach and the coaches, and I’m working hard. But I’m still making too many mistakes in defence. That’s something we need to work on.”
Kim Min-wook has been flying high since his first practice game after the transfer. He scored 26 points in 27 minutes against Sungkyunkwan University. He was incredibly efficient, making 11 of 13 shots. After the game, Kim Min-wook said, “I’ve played a lot of practice games in the past. The key is the regular season. But now I know that if I play well, I can play a lot. It’s hard, but it feels good. Of course, there is pressure. Because when I come, the other players can’t play. That’s why I have to do better.”
Kim Min-wook, who played with Kim for the first time in a long time, said, “Today’s game was also a reminder of my past basketball, and that part was pointed out to me. We need to fix it quickly. Only then will I be able to play the kind of basketball the coach wants,” he said.
In particular, Kim Min-wook said, “It’s important not to get injured. Thankfully, the coach emphasises body care. In other teams, if you take a break for a small injury, they might not look at you well. But it’s different here. He always makes me work out at my best, so if I get sick, he gives me enough time to recover, not just tolerate it.”
Unfortunately, Kim is not in perfect shape. “But because I’m so motivated, my muscles have risen (laughs). I just need to rest a bit. I can control it in training, but not in a practice match, so I’ll have to control myself,” he said.
