K League One champions Ulsan Hyundai will host Kawasaki Frontale in a battle of Korean and Japanese pride.
Ulsan will host Kawasaki in their 2023-2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League (ACL) Group I sixth round match on Wednesday at Munsu Football Stadium.
Ulsan is currently second in the group with three wins, two losses and nine points. A win over Kawasaki (15 points), who have already clinched first place, would see them advance to the round of 16, depending on other group results. The top three teams from each group will get a ticket to the round of 16, so Ulsan must secure 12 points.
Recent form has been good. Ulsan won its fifth group game against BG Pathum United (Thailand) 3-1 on March 28, thanks to an own goal, Rubikson and Lee Myung-jae’s consecutive goals.
On March 3, Ulsan held a grand coronation ceremony with a 1-0 victory over Jeonbuk Hyundai in the 112th Hyundai Family Derby, the final match of the K League One season, with Seol Young-woo scoring the winning goal. A record 28,638 fans attended the game, the largest home attendance of the season, and the team celebrated the trophy afterward, winning its first two consecutive titles and fourth overall.
A day later, Ulsan swept the 2023 Hana One Q K League Grand Prize ceremony organized by the Korea Professional Football Association. Head coach Hong Myung-bo won the award for the second consecutive season. He became only the sixth coach in the 40-year history of the K League to win back-to-back league titles.
Defender Kim Young-kwon, the heart of Ulsan’s soccer team, won the MVP award in his second year in the K League. With 17 goals in 36 appearances, Lee In-gyu regained the top scorer title after a two-year absence. With five players in the season’s Best 11 – Cho Hyun-woo, Kim Young-kwon, Seol Young-woo, Uhm Won-sang, and Lee In-jong-kyu – the Ulsan dynasty was in full swing.
Ulsan’s season wasn’t over yet. With the best possible atmosphere, they will give it their all against Kawasaki. It’s the third consecutive year they’ve met in the ACL. After a goalless draw in the round of 16 in 2021, they won 3-2 on penalties. In 2022, they met twice in the group stage, drawing 1-1 and winning 3-2, but on October 3 this year, Kawasaki conceded just before the end and lost 0-1. In Kawasaki, the team will aim to go all out and put on a spectacular finale. 무지개토토 주소
