Where did it go wrong? Korean soccer has regressed to the past for the first time in more than a year

The “Miracle of Al-Lyyan” has turned into an “Al-Lyyan disaster” in just over a year. The Taegeuk Warriors, who advanced to the round of 16 of the World Cup for the third time in 12 years since the 2010 FIFA Qatar World Cup, had to shake their heads in Qatar, which was called the “Promise Land” about a year later.

The Korean national soccer team, led by German coach Jurgen Klinsmann, knelt 0-2 in the semifinal match against Jordan in Qatar 2023 at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Raiyan, Qatar, on the 7th (Korea time). This concludes Korea’s journey.

The result was truly disastrous. The Korean team, which aims to win the title for the third time in its career (1956 and 1960) in 64 years since the 1960 Asian Cup, has formed a team of super-luxury players including Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur), Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich), Lee Jae-sung (FSV Mainz 05), Lee Kang-in (Paris Saint-Germain), and Hong Hyun-seok (KAA Hent). All of them were top-notch players in the European league.

Nevertheless, Korea, which is ranked 23rd in FIFA rankings, has never shown overwhelming performance in matches against lower-ranked teams throughout the tournament. Except for the match against Bahrain (3-1 win), which was the first Group E match, the team failed to secure a win within the regular time, and even this was the result of Lee Kang-in’s ability to score multiple goals. The number of points lost to opponents in six matches amounts to a whopping 10 points.
The Klinsmann team, which continued its journey through the quarterfinals through the tournament thanks to “Do Me Soccer” and luck, was clearly revealed in the semifinal match against Bahrain. After being dragged around all the time, they lost points to Yazan Al-Naimat and Moussa Al-Tamari in succession in the 9th minute of the second half and 21st minute of the second half, respectively, failing to avoid 0-2 defeat. It is the first time that Korea has lost to Jordan.

In addition, Korea was trampled by Jordan in terms of the number of shootings (7-17) and the number of effective shootings (0-7). Had it not been for Cho Hyun-woo (Ulsan HD) goalkeeper’s solid defense, he could have lost a large amount of points.

How did it go wrong? Let’s set the clock back about a year. Korea, led by Paulo Bento (Portugal) and the current United Arab Emirates coach, was not a weak team at the Qatar World Cup. The team was also close to losing ground in the midfield battle against Uruguay and Portugal, and as a result, it was able to achieve valuable results by advancing to the round of 16.

However, the issue was not until then. After breaking up with Bento for four years, the Korea Football Association looked for a new coach and put Klinsmann in charge. 마카오토토주소
Klinsmann’s career is truly splendid. He participated in the Euro championships three times in a row from 1988 to 1996, and led Germany to the championship in 1996. He participated in the World Cup for three times in a row, starting with the Italian championship in 1990, the American championship in 1994, and the French championship in 1998, and even lifted the trophy in the 1990s.
